Nebraska DHHS Awarded Grant Money for Suicide Prevention

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services was notified last week it will receive $500,000 per year for 3 years to implement best practices to prevent youth suicide. The grant is from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the US Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Health and Human Services will work with the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center and Interchurch Ministries of Nebraska to carry out grant activities and evaluate project progress.

PPC Student Achievements

Two Public Policy Center Students were recently accepted into two highly competitive programs: one interning as a psychologist in training and the other studying abroad through a summer language scholarship.

Autumn Backhaus, Public Policy Center Graduate Research Assistant since 2006, has been selected for a one-year American Psychological Association internship. The internship will be at Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of California, San Diego. Autumn will join the organization as a psychologist in training.

Jessie Cleveland, Undergraduate Research Assistant since 2008, will be studying beginning Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, in Lucknow, India through a Critical Language Scholarship, which is funded through the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers. For this program, there were over 5000 applicants for approximately 500 spots. Jessie is one of 20 program participants studying Urdu this summer. From UNL, she is one of two recipients of the Critical Language Scholarship.
