Growing Success: Statewide Community Summit on Depression

Dick Cavett

On June 19th, 2008, the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center and lead partner NET convened a statewide summit on creating pathways to the successful treatment of depression. Noted talk show personality, humorist, and Nebraska-native Dick Cavett served as the event's keynote speaker, and talked about his personal experiences as a depression survivor.

The theme of the summit was “Growing Success,” and also featured a panel of local experts and series of discussions about what communities throughout Nebraska can do to plan for and create opportunities for the successful treatment of depression. Among the topics addressed were: depression 101, success stories of depression survivors, and depression among military families, the elderly, and teens. The event was held at NET Television Studios in Lincoln.

“Growing Success” was part of a national initiative called Depression: Out of the Shadows – a multi-faceted project designed to further discussion about the disease that afflicts 21 million American adults. The television documentary Depression: Out of the Shadows, premiered nationwide on May 21, 2008, at 8 PM CST on NET Television. The documentary provides an overview of depression, highlights recent research and novel treatments, and features insight from survivors and families who have been touched by the disease

Registration closed for this event Monday, June 16th.

Individuals will be able to participate in the Growing Success Summit at the Lincoln site or live via video conference in Chadron, Grand Island, Omaha, or Scottsbluff.
